Wow, wow, wow – I use Tidy every single day now, and it has become one of those apps I really wouldn’t want to be without on my Mac.

The range of features has become impressive and continues to grow. What I particularly love, though, is how quietly and resource-efficiently Tidy sits in the menu bar and simply does what it is supposed to do in the background.

One thing that is especially important to me is how carefully Tidy handles my files: files aren’t simply deleted permanently, and actions can be reversed using the undo feature. With an app that I trust to organize my files, that gives me a real sense of confidence and security.

On top of that, the developer is someone I’ve come to know as exceptionally dedicated, friendly and genuinely close to his users. He responds to feedback and suggestions quickly, personally and always politely – and useful ideas find their way into one of the next versions surprisingly often.

Tidy is evolving at an impressive pace right now without becoming unnecessarily complicated.

What more could you ask for? I’m genuinely impressed and, based on my own daily experience with Tidy, I’m very happy to recommend it.

Sven, thank you. You wrote the first review Tidy ever had, back when it didn't speak German, and that was the reason it does now.

For anyone reading this later: the "actions can be reversed" part is not a feature I added, it's the whole point. Tidy never deletes anything, ever. Everything goes to the Trash and a run undoes in one click.

What is Tidy for Mac?

Menu bar app that keeps Downloads and the Desktop organized on their own. It names files by reading what is written inside them ("download (3).pdf" becomes "invoice-march.pdf"): images and scanned PDFs through the OCR built into macOS, and Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, Numbers, RTF and HTML through the readers macOS already ships. It also searches inside images and scanned PDFs, where Spotlight finds nothing.

Rules can filter by what a file says inside, and by where it came from — the site it was downloaded from or the app that delivered it, like WhatsApp, Mail or AirDrop. You can also scan paper straight from your iPhone camera, and the shot lands in Downloads already named after what it says.

It also collects loose folders: it looks inside each one first and only proposes the ones nothing has touched in a number of days you choose. It learns your filing habits, so if you move files the same way three times it offers to write the rule, and it never acts alone. It also warns you if a scanned ID or card number is sitting in your Downloads.

No account, no server, no telemetry. It never deletes anything: everything goes to the Trash, there is a dry-run mode, and any run undoes in one click. $9 once, macOS 14 and later, in English, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese.
