Syncthing Alternatives

In an age of increasing security concerns, privacy-focused tools like Syncthing have gained notoriety among the tech crowd. The app securely synchronizes files across computers and mobile devices.

There are some great alternatives, most being open-source like Syncthing, which is important to many developers as the source code is always available to check for security holes. Others may prefer to put their trust in well-established commercial tools.

Some alternatives require a decentralized server but you can easily filter for peer-to-peer tools to find the closest matches. Most tools have desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux. Many also provide Android or iPhone apps as well.

Syncthing alternatives are mainly File Sync Tools but may also be Cloud Storage Services or Online Backup Tools. Filter by these if you want a narrower list of alternatives or looking for a specific functionality of Syncthing.

It's still free for personal use, but is updated commercially. Comes from good people and they should be good for a while.

It allows one-way syncs without deletes, which means that you can use this app to backup data from one device to another (i.e. from your phone to computer) and then delete the data from your phone to free up space. Syncthing doesn't allow this and if you delete the data from the original source, it gets deleted everywhere it was synced to.

Most closely matches the scope of things needed to setup and run. Other open source options require server setup, often expanding out to additional packages such as database servers, etc.

rsync is a pure command line client, requiring explicitly the command to be typed, with accurate data on the destination whereas Syncthing seems to run in background. This would require to use rsync plus something else (e.g. a scheduler, cron, acron, pick one)

they have some overlapping features but are pretty different tools. rsync is much more powerful in the diversity of things it can do and is purely command line. syncthing has a web interface (in addition to cli for those who are so inclined) and device apps and is simpler to set up. rsync will easily let you hose your files if you use it wrong whereas syncthing is more set up to avoid that.

syncthing runs on devices you control (your computer, your phone) or have access to. rclone interacts with servers other people run.

Ordinarily, SyncThing - which is great - runs in a web browser tab. Some people don't like that. Fair enough. So they made SyncTrayzor which gives you an alternative way of accessing SynThing functionality via the taskbar. It's not an alternative, though. It's an add-on. I don't see that much of an advantage, but others might.

It's an alternative way to use the front-end of syncthing (so it's not a full alternative to syncthing -- it is an add-on), and a great one. I recommend it to ease the usability curve for most users.
