What is Swordfish-FM?

Swordfish-FM is a fast, lightweight, and completely portable graphical file manager designed specifically for Linux and X11 environments. As a modern fork and continuation of the classic X File Explorer (Xfe), Swordfish-FM features a completely redesigned user interface focused on intuitive ease of use, a simplified workflow, and lightning-fast performance. True to its name, Swordfish-FM is built for speed and agility. Developed using the robust FOX Toolkit, it features an incredibly tiny memory and CPU footprint and rapid startup times. Because it is entirely desktop-independent, you will experience the exact same responsive look, feel, and performance whether you are running a heavy modern desktop environment or a minimal window manager. Key Features & Major Workflow Improvements: • Zero-Installation Portability: Compiles into a completely self-contained Linux build. Simply download the latest release from the GitHub release page, extract the ZIP archive and launch the application instantly via the included AppRun script—no system-wide dependencies or root directory clutter required. • Redesigned, Intuitive UI: Built from the ground up for a cleaner, modern layout that streamlines everyday navigation and file manipulation. • Address Bar Network Mounting: Easily reach, access, and mount network shares directly from the main address bar. • Dynamic, In-Line Archive Management: View archives seamlessly as folders directly in your layout. These archive folders are fully dynamic; you can add, remove, copy, paste, or move items into and out of them on the fly. The original archive updates automatically in the background while safely creating a backup of your original file. • Expandable Folders: Navigate your directory tree smoothly with expandable folder trees directly within the main list view. • Deep Theme & Icon Customization: Includes a wide selection of prebuilt themes and icon sets. The advanced theme engine allows you to edit, save, export, and import customized themes shared by other users in the community. • Open Source Continuity: Fully distributed under the GNU General Public License v2.0 (GPLv2). Whether you need a low-resource alternative to heavy modern desktop file managers or want a powerful, modular evolution of Xfe with modern archive, network, and theme handling, Swordfish-FM offers an agile, feature-rich solution for Linux users. Swordfish-FM preserves the extensive multi-language localization from the original Xfe codebase. While some translations are still being updated, they are fully usable, and the system automatically falls back to English for any missing strings.
