I use it for 3 months and it's great: Pros:

  1. Lightweight: not 10 MB, not 20 MB, just 4 MB.
  2. Performance: quick start
  3. Support of other players: you can play youtube videos in VLC or something else.
  4. You can download videos
  5. Picture in Picture support
  6. No ads
  7. FOSS, for me it matter

Cons:

  1. You can't login to yout account: no history, no recommendations
  2. No trends

My usecase: at first I open youtube video page in browser (from articles, from recommendations, etc), at second, I just open link in application

Video stops or gets out of sync whenever phone gets into landscape mode or vice-versa. Audio stops for a couple of seconds when the screen is turned off. Crashes regularly.

The only drawback – though it’s hardly one – is the lack of a ‘SponsorBlock’ feature. The developer(s) have deliberately omitted this on the grounds that if a sponsor appears in the video, it’s important to support the creator. Whilst this is certainly true, it should also be possible to let the creator know when a sponsorship is not accepted for various ethical or moral reasons.

Conversely, on PipePipe, you can’t choose whether to watch the sponsorship or skip it. A middle ground, already offered by SponsorBlock on the web, would be a good compromise.

One last thing that would be really nice is a tool similar to BlockTube (or its integration) to better filter out what you don’t want in search results.

A clean Android setup with the best apps (mostly open source)

Everytime I setup a phone for a friend or myself I usually remove stock apps using adb or UniversalAndroidDebloaterNextGeneration and replace them with theses apps listed here. I added also a couple of nice to have apps that people might wants on their device. Almost all of them are free as in free beer and many are open source (around 80%) I tried to feature more applications and less services but there are several services still in this list, however I find them great and/or accessible (freemium most of the time). FOSS = Free(as in freedom) and Open Source Software

What is NewPipe?

NewPipe is a lightweight YouTube icon YouTube front-end for Android. It also supports SoundCloud icon SoundCloud, media.ccc.de icon media.ccc.de, PeerTube icon PeerTube, and Bandcamp icon Bandcamp.

It works independently of Google's services, extracting data directly from YouTube, making it functional on devices without Google Play Services icon Google Play Services. The NewPipe Extractor component is used by other apps for data extraction.

The app offers features like video searches, information about videos, viewing videos up to 4K resolution, and background audio streaming. It also has a popup mode, live stream viewing, and subtitle options.

NewPipe also allows searches for YouTube videos and audios with language specification. Users can queue videos, save them as local playlists, and control visibility of video information. The app enables channel browsing and subscription without account login, channel group management, and content downloading. Users can view and search watch history, open content in Kodi icon Kodi, and manage access to age-restricted material.
