What is MacPorts?
The MacPorts Project is an opensource package management system that simplifies compiling, installing, upgrading, and removal of other open-source software on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and later, running on Intel or Apple Silicon.
As of June 2022, MacPorts has nearly 30k active ports. Ports can be easily searched at: https://ports.macports.org/
MacPorts has several features that simplify managing software. Some of MacPorts most notable features are:
- Installing each package into a separate private sandbox.
- Required dependencies are automatically installed and updated.
- Automates compiling source code if needed for installation.
- Ability to easily create an installer for quick install on several computers.
