Comment summary: Greenshot is highly regarded by users for being lightweight, open-source, and providing robust screenshot capabilities. While praised for its ease of use, diverse settings, and low memory usage, some users note missing features like video capture and full window scrolling. There are complaints about certain features not being available for MacOS, with users emphasizing its Windows compatibility. Despite a few criticisms, Greenshot is generally seen as a reliable and functional screenshot tool.

ShareX icon ShareX

see this app

it runs greenshot for image editing but has slew of numerous features layered on top of it, including gif support, uploading host support, scroll captures, OCR recognition, etc

shareX is like greenshot 2.0

POST UPDATE 1/1/18

Greenshot standalone is starting to incorporate a lot of shareX features, I use both a standalone greenshot and sharex+portable-green-shot editor right now, depending on what I'm doing. I customize shareX extensively, greenshot I use all default values out of the box since the defaults are great

ShareX vs Greenshot comparison

Greenshot Pros

  • Dynamically saving location is miles ahead better than shareX
  • Better editor obviously, since shareX image editor based on greenshot

Greenshot Cons

  • Cannot set an automatic save file if using dynamic save location
  • Doesn't support image hosting logins
  • Doesn't support gifs

I find it better than ShareX since it's lightweight and does not consume as much RAM as a background process. Also very easy to use.

Works flawless since years. I would love to see an update (last in 2017), but if it works, it works.

Simple. Very much like how I can configure the keyboard shortcuts and set the output destination. Donationware (at least on Windows). Other software may provide more but all I needed was what Greenshot provides.

What is Greenshot?
