When the app whose only purpose is to keep you more secure is a security risk by itself you can be sure it's made by Google:

App data no longer can be backup or restored due to use of android keystore based encryption so any reinstall or uninstall will cause app wont able to decrypt data from backup.
There is much better alternative such as Aegis which is free and open source, and support backup and restore
Don't use Google Authenticator (GA). Even when app tells you, including Google themselves, to use it, you an use any OTP app. Authy is far better than any of the options from big tech like GA or from Microsoft. There are more secure ones but for ease of use and decent privacy, Authy beats GA and MS hands down.
If you could have exactly the same functionality as Google Authenticator or Authy but using open source software, you should prefer it for reasons of transparency and security, at the very least. That's what FreeOTP offers. Please use it instead of Google Authenticator or Authy. There's no need to have proprietary code in matters of security, and particularly not in this case.
