At first I was using FreeOTP, but as I noticed their development had slowed down, I looked into what else was available in the open-source world. Aegis came up quite often. I must admit I’m not entirely sure if there’s a difference between the two in terms of how they generate OTPs, but I liked the fact that it uses a password. One notable difference, which is a slight drawback for me, is that on FreeOTP, when I click on a service’s 2FA code, it’s copied straight to the clipboard. Whereas here,...

Aegis Authenticator is one of my favorite 2FA apps because it gives me full control over my authentication codes. I really like that everything can be encrypted, backed up, and exported without locking me into a specific ecosystem. The interface is clean, customizable, and easy to navigate, making everyday use pleasant. If you're looking for a secure, open-source alternative to Google Authenticator or Authy, I think Aegis is definitely worth considering

I'm shocked to see how many 5-star reviews are here. It's like everybody rates this software when they only start to use it and then never change the rating when problems arise.

I, too, was a fan of Aegis, until I needed to rename a group, something this basic is just not possible and the issue on GitHub is opened for years now. Same with adding an entry to multiple groups. If you don't see a reason for such a feature, it's clear you don't have many accounts with 2FA enabled.

You could just delete the group and add a new one though.

One notable difference, which is a slight drawback for me, is that on FreeOTP, when I click on a service’s 2FA code, it’s copied straight to the clipboard. Whereas here, with the option to copy to the clipboard, I have to double-click (which reveals the OTP on the first click and then hides it on the second).
