What is Frame Player?

Frame Player is a free and open-source (GPL-3.0) video player for Windows and macOS. Decoding is handled by libmpv, the same engine used by mpv and IINA, so format support, hardware decoding, HDR and Dolby Vision tone mapping come from mpv itself; the interface on top is a native-feeling desktop app rather than mpv's on-screen controller.

Playback

  • Seekbar thumbnails that sharpen to the exact frame once the cursor stops
  • Opening one episode queues the rest of the folder in natural order
  • Resume from the last position, including remembered audio and subtitle tracks, which are matched by language and title rather than track number, so a dub choice carries over between episodes
  • Skip intro/credits based on chapter titles, end screen with next-episode countdown
  • A–B loop, frame stepping, zoom and pan, frame export with HDR tone mapping preserved
  • Mini player that stays on top (on macOS also over other apps' fullscreen spaces)
  • 36 rebindable hotkeys based on physical keys, so they work in any keyboard layout
  • Your own mpv.conf is respected

Links and torrents

  • Opens local files, direct URLs and pages supported by yt-dlp (installed on demand)
  • Streams magnet links, .torrent files and tracker RSS feeds while they download, with a buffer map, peer and speed readouts; seeding is off by default
  • Optional catalog: TMDB metadata (posters, localized titles, seasons) plus a Torznab-compatible indexer, with a switch to turn it off entirely

Subtitles

  • OpenSubtitles search by file hash or title, with a warning when the subtitle's frame rate does not match the video
  • Subtitles move out of the way of the control bar; per-file subtitle and audio delay

Casting

  • Google Cast (Chromecast) and DLNA/UPnP TVs; files the TV cannot play are remuxed on the fly without re-encoding video
  • Torrents can be cast while still downloading; the app window works as a remote

Watch together

  • Shared playback rooms that keep several viewers in sync; drift is corrected by playback speed rather than seeking, and only the timeline goes through the relay server, never the media

Privacy

  • No account, no telemetry. Folders can be marked private so nothing about their contents is recorded.
