Nextcloud is an open source software that allows you to manage your files and sync them across all your devices - like Dropbox. There are, however, several differences: You can self-host a Nextcloud instance, allowing you to fully manage it, or you can use a Nextcloud provider to host your data for you. You have access to more security, privacy and administration options. You can add plugins for almost everything (emails, tasks, calendars, maps, news, video chats, notes, and more).

Of course, it’s a bit more complicated to set up since you have to self-host it or find a provider, but if what you’re looking for is an open source and extensible solution that you can fully manage yourself, Nextcloud might be the right pick for you.

With self-hosted sync, you maintain complete control over your data instead of trusting it to some third-party company. Plus, Nextcloud offers handy features like calendar integration and automatic photo uploads from your phone

It runs well even on an old laptop or a large server, great for sharing files, collaborating on documents and managing my photo library.

Google Drive is one of the best known Dropbox alternatives. It’s proprietary and cloud-based, but it's pretty similar to Dropbox, and it can be very convenient if you're already using other Google products. It’s particularly useful if you’re likely to share and work on documents (Google Docs for example) with other people. Google Drive offers a free plan with 15 GB of storage, and you can pay a monthly subscription to get more ($2 for 100 GB, $10 for 1 TB or $100 for 10 TB).

It has more space than what drop box provides. Plus all the google Services. But Windows - Backup and Sync app is slow. Dropbox app for windows is much better.

When you backup files to Google Drive, it changes the file creation date to the current time. That's a major downside for some use cases.

Mega is a secure cloud storage and communication service that was launched in 2013 by Kim Dotcom, who had founded the now-defunct service Megaupload. Unlike Megaupload, Mega doesn't offer streaming content. It simply allows you to store files online and share them with other users like Dropbox or Google Drive. However, it has a much larger storage space than its competitors with 50 GB for a free account, compared to 2 GB for Dropbox, and 15 GB for Google Drive. Among its features, Mega offers end-to-end encryption even for free accounts, a secured chat for online collaboration, an easy way to share files with anyone, automated synchronization between all your devices, and much more.

My main concern is that it integrates with windows and uses the same global account, therefore making you locked into that particular account. If I want to mix my personal and work microsoft accounts for login and storage I can't. Unfortunately, this makes this useless and a bad alternative to Dropbox.

pCloud is a good alternative to Dropbox because it offers the same functionality with the following benefits: 1. It offers the option of an encrypted folder, so even pCloud employees can't see or steal your data; 2. pCloud is based in Switzerland where privacy rules are far stronger than in the US. 3. pCloud offers a larger amount of free space (5GB vs 2GB from Dropbox.)

Data privacy is far better than Dropbox, and the encrypted folder works well. It acts just like a drive connected to your PC, not a folder, so the file is stored directly in your cloud account, and not at all on your device. When you het the larger drives (I have the 2TB), it allows me to run the Built-in backup utilities on the web interface to back up Dropbox, facebook, Google Drive and Google Photo's, giving me an extra level of redundancy in my backups.

Founded in 2005 in the US, Box is one of the oldest cloud-based file storage and sharing services. Known for its collaboration tools for businesses, it integrates more than 1,000 third-party applications through its application library called OneCloud. Despite a free 10 GB storage offer, it remains relatively unknown to the general public. Compatible with most platforms, it integrates countless features and third-party applications. It’s a reliable service, but with many limitations depending on the subscription plan you choose (starting at $10 per month for 100 GB for a personal plan).

Although Seafile.de works with a slightly more complex client than does Dropbox, it also has more options. Importantly, it's open source, unlike Dropbox. Also, storing files using Seafile.de 's services mean your data is stored in Germany, which has stricter privacy laws. Note: Whilst Seafile does offer client-side encryption, at the time of writing this encrypts only file contents, not names or metadata. (Dropbox doesn't offer this at all, however.)

Sync.com is a MUCH better choice than Dropbox (unless you use Linux), because it does everything Dropbox does, but it uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that your data is stored in a way only you can view it. That's not true of Dropbox, because they keep the encryption keys, which can be used by employees to see what you've got, stolen by hackers or passed on to the feds.

End-to-end encryption and simple interface makes Sync.com a good alternative. The vault, where you can archive files in the cloud, is a nice touch.
