Aptana Studio Comments

Less powerful than Netbeans

IMHO, Aptana is better than PDT in Eclipse however if we compare free and cross-platform solutions than Netbeans is much more powerful.

Anyway, if commercial software is not a stop-blocker than I would strongly recommend phpStorm. I just love this one.

They turned their back on the PHP community, Apatana basically went down the toilet when that happened.

Not great for HTML/JS/CSS -- I prefer IDEs that focus on particular languages.

Starting Rails development has been a real hassle, since i have to do a clean install of RubyGems again and then install Mongrel to get the damn thing going. Hopefully they'll start to think about better packaging of the features and upgrades.

If you're doing PHP development, you better skip v2.0 and stick to v1.5 for now. With the switch to PDT in 2.0 the features are lacking compared to what was there before.

Aptana is one of the few cross platform IDEs that can take full advantage of the Zen-Coding, a set of plugins for HTML and CSS hi-speed coding.

It is definitely the best free IDE (with some optional commercial things), and i have not found a better alternative for it in the realm of free IDEs, but there is only one down side to Aptana and that is the fact that it takes a life time for it start up, even on my machine wich 4GBs of RAM it takes more than 15secs to run, more than photoshop cs3 or even 3DsMax, I have already contacted them about it and they said they are working their butts off to reduce the footprint of it's run time. exactly when? well only god knows, but at least they listen to us. if you don't have problems with that and the other fact that it runs on Java platform then it's the best you can get.

Just be aware that if you are using Aptana with PHP you will probably want to install the PHP extensions as they are not included by default. Short of being pretty chunky and written in Java this is still a fab IDE to do any web work in. Highly customisable with some great features to make your life easier.

Of the apps on this list, if someone is used to working with DreamWeaver, Aptana is going to be the least painful transition for you. I've used almost all of these apps and it's the closest to having an identical feature set.
