WhatsApp adds AI-powered message summaries to private chats in the US

WhatsApp has launched an AI-powered feature designed to help users quickly catch up on unread messages. Once enabled, the feature generates concise summaries of missed conversations so users do not need to read each message individually. Tapping the unread message count and selecting 'Summarize privately' displays the key points in a bulleted format.

It's worth noting that the feature currently only supports one-on-one private chats; group conversations are not yet compatible. Powered by Meta AI, it uses Meta’s 'Private Processing' technology to keep messages and summaries confidential. Neither WhatsApp nor Meta staff can access this data, and chat participants are not notified when the feature is used.

Currently, the rollout is limited to users in the United States with WhatsApp set to English. WhatsApp plans to expand support to more languages and regions in 2025. The feature is optional and disabled by default, with users retaining full control through the Advanced Chat Privacy settings.

Would this ring a bell in people's head about WhatsApp being to much invasive? Unfortunately that would be a minority... AI is here to make the next generation of data harvesting
