Google launches Gemini CLI Extensions with public GitHub ecosystem and major partners

Google has launched extensions for Gemini CLI, opening its command-line AI tool to third-party integrations. With this release, over one million developers gain access to an open ecosystem where anyone can publish or install extensions, all without requiring Google’s endorsement. Extensions are publicly hosted on GitHub and can be installed via a single command, streamlining the workflow for users eager to expand their AI toolset.

At launch, initial partners include Figma, Stripe, Dynatrace, Elastic, Harness.io, Postman, Shopify, and Snyk, with Google and community developers offering additional tools. Google’s in-house extensions cover services such as Google Cloud Run, Google Kubernetes Engine, Firebase, Flutter, Google Chrome Developer Tools, Google Maps, Looker Studio, Google Cloud BigQuery, and Google Cloud SQL. These integrations enable tasks ranging from monitoring and deployment to design-to-code workflows.

Built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Gemini CLI Extensions add a playbook layer that defines tool capabilities, scripts, and APIs. Each package includes context files and commands for portability. Google’s Nanobanana image generator, released alongside the update, allows image creation directly in the CLI. A new catalog ranks extensions by GitHub stars, supporting Google’s open and community-driven approach in contrast to OpenAI’s recent curated ChatGPT integrations.
