Linux Mint 22 will be named 'Wilma' and will be based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
In the latest monthly news post, Linux Mint revealed the name of their forthcoming Linux distribution as Linux Mint 22, or “Wilma”. The release is scheduled for June or July 2024. Linux Mint 22 will be developed on Canonical's forthcoming Ubuntu 24.04 LTS “Noble Numbat” operating system series, which is expected to launch in April 2024.
This means that Ubuntu 24.04 LTS' Linux 6.8 kernel will power Linux Mint 22. It is also anticipated to arrive with a new major release of the Cinnamon desktop environment. The Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint 22 will feature a new tool, the Nemo Actions Organizer. This tool will allow users to organize their Nemo actions into menus and submenus, with support for nested submenus, menu icons, separators, and drag-and-drop. Additionally, it will enable users to rename actions and override their icons.
Linux Mint also addressed potential issues with Wayland sessions in Linux Mint 21.3, stating that these could potentially influence Xorg sessions and cause specific problems. Since Wayland support in 21.3 is still experimental, it's pretty unlikely that it'll replace Xorg in Linux Mint 22.
