SoundCloud introduces TikTok-Style Discovery Feed with AI-selected song previews
SoundCloud has introduced a new discovery feed, similar to TikTok format with vertical scrolling and short song clips. Available to all iOS and Android users, this feature was initially trialed a few months ago but is now accessible to the entire SoundCloud user base. Users can preview 30-second song snippets before choosing to play the full track, with artists having the option to select their own preview highlights. SoundCloud states that the new feature uses AI tools in order to pick the most appealing 30-second clip for song previews, tailored to each user's personal preferences.
The revamped user interface now features shortcut buttons for adding songs to playlists or libraries and liking tracks for later. Users who favor the previous following feed can still view it via the "Following" tab to check out tracks from artists they follow. The feature resembles what's seen on platforms like Netflix, which provides small video clips from movies or series to promote them to users. SoundCloud isn't really reinventing the wheel here though; let's remember that in March of this year, Spotify also launched a discovery feature for music and podcasts, quite similar to the one SoundCloud is experimenting with. Additionally, YouTube Music recently joined the trend with 'Samples'. Not to mention that TikTok Music is currently in beta but aims to become a significant alternative to these other services.
However, SoundCloud remains an interesting indie alternative for those looking for life beyond Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Music, especially with the recent news of Spotify introducing paywalls for features that were previously free or increasing the price of its subscriptions.
