the most promising free / open source DAW !
During installation and launching errors constantly popped up.
Technically it's open source code, but it's not clear how to build it yourself.
It may be interesting software, but still unfinished.
My favorite DAW. I first tried to use it when the project was really new (probably early alpha). It would constantly crash, almost nothing worked. The only good thing about it back then was the beautiful interface, which is almost useless when you can't use it. When it was in beta around 2024, I tried to use it a second time. It still crashed when I tried to use audio plugins like Cardinal. Also, there were no working audio outputs or midi inputs, and therefore still unusable. A few weeks later, after an update, audio output worked and some audio plugins, but not midi inputs. And a few weeks later, it would no longer crash when trying to use Cardinal, and MIDI inputs worked, just not simultaneously with audio output. And later, those issues were fixed too. This program is one of my favorite applications. It has audio plugin bridging, so the DAW does not crash when the plugin does. On the GitLab page, there are pending changes that sound and look really good, and the developer is mostly really active. The only bad thing about this project now is the funding. Sadly, not that many use this application currently and donate. Hopefully, the developer will get more donations after the first release of the software. If you see most bad reviews about this software crashing or being buggy and the review is older than ~1-year-old, just ignore it.
Terrible. This was suggested for editing MIDI files. There's no way to even open a file of any type. The program window is not resizeable, and it's tiny. There's also no way to close the program without killing the process manually.
Hello, I am not a software creator, but indeed, source code is available free, so you can install it as open source also, but they sell it. Maybe the open source has fewer options then the paid one, maybe not, but the author prefers to sell it, but it is available.
Both the free and paid versions are open source, and all features from the paid ones are in the source code. The creator just enables limits when compiling, depending on the version. Also, the exclusive plugins in the paid versions are open source. You can compile the plugins and the DAW without restrictions from the source if you know how to. The limits in the official builds on the website are just encouragements to donate. Also, open source licenses do not restrict you from selling the software. The only requirement is that every person who has access to the compiled software needs to have access to the source code just as easily as the compiled software. A good example is Ardour which is open source but not free. Also, Krita costs in the Microsoft Store, as do some other open source programs too.

Promising beta DAW !
No open software, no free
It is open source, libre software, which means that the source code of the program is openly available, and the licence permits you to copy it, improve it or use it for your own programs. Open source does not mean it must cost nothing to use.
