Comment summary: Double Commander is praised as a cross-platform, open-source tool with similar functionality to Total Commander. Users appreciate its versatility on multiple OS, compatibility with Total Commander plugins, and being completely free. Some note minor flaws like slower development and lack of polish compared to Total Commander. Users value its cross-platform availability, especially for Linux, and its usability with long file names, a feature Total Commander struggles with.

It looks very similar and can do almost everything that Total Commander can - but it's cross-platform!

A completely free, multi-platform tool is available that serves as an excellent alternative to Total Commander. It offers high customization, including the ability to use plugins (*.wlx, *.wlc, etc.). However, when utilized in Windows, adjustments are needed for a Windows-like experience. In addition, I also use FreeCommander on Windows, which is less customizable but more user-friendly than the previous tool. It also supports Total Commander plugins.

It’s difficult to compare the two as if you need zip compression and FTP, XYplorer does not have these features. But XYPlorer have a ton of features that Total Commander lacks. XYplorer is a modern file manager with clean interface and very customable - you can have quick access and in tons of way. It’s not a "simple" file explorer and I discover features I did never use before. So, they are files explorer but philosophy is so different that they don’t play the same game.
