How can you not love Tailscale - it makes it so simple to access all of your devices as if they were on the same LAN. Uses WireGuard, so it's fast as heck. The free tier allows you to connect 100 (!!) devices, and there's even a self-hosted version if that's more your thing. An unbeatable service and value.

tldr - tailscale relies on something called magicdns, and magicdns.be site returns a "Secure Site Not Available" https error Love the idea of Tailscale, and the fact that it's based on the universally lauded Wiregaurd protocol, if that's the right word. Not a review, more of a .. caution? Emphasise here that I am in no way even a slightly technical person, and should not be let loose near a command prompt. What prompted this review, tho, was seeing reference in the Tailscale docs to something called MagicDNS. Googled magicdns, came in about 15th place in results, clicked and oh shite that's not good. "You’ve enabled HTTPS-Only Mode for enhanced security, and a HTTPS version of www.magicdns.be is not available." Having looked at Tailscale soon after it first launched and thought wow, what a time to be alive? Then coming back years later for a rereview and finding a basic website security failure? Reminded me of a comment posted on an early Tailscale review, something scathingly sarcastic along the lines of 'oh great, a single point of failure, let me know when it's on pastebin'. Again, no expert, and this might be a tiny flaw in an anotherwise mindblowing app, but let's just say an http/s failure is a red flag. 'If they can't get basic stuff right, what else are they not getting right'. No doubt alternatives to -heh- magicdns can be applied, and I'm happy to be schooled on this red flag, but for an aging newb, nah. Two stars.
AFAICT magicdns.be is nothing whatsoever to do with Tailscale. MagicDNS is a feature within Tailscale:- https://tailscale.com/kb/1081/magicdns
magicdns.be checks out as follows:- https://iplookup.flagfox.net/?host=www.magicdns.be https://whois.domaintools.com/magicdns.be https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=www.magicdns.be
Jason, you admit to being "in no way even a slightly technical person" --- so, giving a 2-star rating based on misunderstanding is a bit silly.

@Natterjack565 flagging a basic security failure is "a bit silly"? Maybe, but your links don't provide any insight as to why there was a basic security failure. Or who MagicDNS actually is. In fact your links only deepen my concerns they all return: Status: "NOT AVAILABLE" Your SSL link analysis = "Certificate name mismatch" Double checking - the MagicDNS site does not even load now !! So instead of getting better it's getting worse. Perhaps a level 7 expert can explain how these basic failures should NOT raise red flags.

Watch my lips, Jason! magicdns.be has nothing whatsoever to do with Tailscale. I am not remotely interested in the security of a totally unrelated website. There is no"basic security failure" with Tailscale. Your continued 2-star rating denigrates Tailscale and is an abrogation of what AlternativeTo is here for.

You appear confused. These two statements cannot both be true: "AFAICT magicdns.be is nothing whatsoever to do with Tailscale." And, you say immediately afterwards: "MagicDNS is a feature within Tailscale.." If in fact you are correct in your second statement, then I am reporting fact, and not denigrating anyone, much less in abrogation of anything. Because? It logically follows that a 'feature' of Tailscale is a DNS company that does not in fact exist (it doesn't, I checked), and cannot be relied on for basic website security or, indeed, a website at all. Similarly, I do not care one jot what you are interested in, remotely or otherwise. My concern is around a supposedly secure app featuring other software that fails basic security.

Jason, If you (temporariliy) go to the insecure http://www.magicdns.be/ you will see nothing to indicate a connection with Tailscale. magicdns.be appears to be a Belgian outfit offering DNS services. The home page's antiquated graphic of an aged PC and failure to implement HTTPS suggests unwillingness to keep up with the times.
Rest assured that use of the term MagicDNS by the two concerns is entirely disparate.

Ah, got it. Apologies for late reply, I finally get what you are saying. That websites have nothing to do with Tail using the same name. Accept your corrections, while at the same time going back to the fact that Tailscale frequently refers to open source, but is not, completely, see:
"Everything in Tailscale is Open Source, except the GUI clients for proprietary OS (Windows and macOS/iOS), and the control server," in discussion on Headscale, an open source alternative to the Tailscale control server.
MagicDNS is in the control server?

This is so stupid. Please correct the rating for this excellent software.

Be fascinated to know what OJ Simpson finds "stupid" about proprietary bundles in an allegedly open software implementation.
As above, I could not confirm any relationship between Tailscale and other usages of the term MagicDNS.
But concerns about undeclared software remain - this is akin to spyware at worst, misrepresentation at best.

I'm completelly amazed about this service. I connected 10 devices including Synology NAS, Iphone, Android, Windows, linux and chromebook in less than 30 minutes. Also the price is amazingly cheap !
Totally recommended !!!!
