Sadly, SourceForge has seen it as their goal to distribute adware in their installers.
They've been silently, without explicit concent, packaging older apps (2ys or older) in installers which provide you with relevant content (read: adware, crapware and other nopeware).
Therefore, this site can no longer be trusted as a clean source for programs. If you must download from this site, use software like Unchecky to prevent your PC from getting blown up with useless programs.
You're better of using GitHub (with their Releases system) or a package manager like Chocolatey

That hasn't been the case for several years since the new owners acquired it and did away with the adware: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3032490/new-sourceforge-owners-kill-contentious-devshare-bloatware-program.html

It allows peoples to release software for users easily, other than developer code share sites.
I work for a SaaS company that sells software. SourceForge is by far our number one channel for acquiring new customers. We pay for a Plus Package on SourceForge for our business software, so that we are listed in their software directory. They provide way more qualified clicks than other business software directories. We also have a community version (open source) of our product, so we list that in their open source section, and get thousands of downloads per week for free. SourceForge is a godsend when it comes to marketing business software and acquiring new customers. Their open source platform has been vastly improved in the past few years, and is much more user friendly than GitHub if your goal is to distribute software to non-coder end users. The download stats and reporting they provide are also very useful.
Where do I start? There's so many cool aspects of SourceForge. They have a giant free open source software directory complete with development and collaboration tools, and it's organized in a very user-friendly manner, like an app store, but for open source software. In addition, they have a really comprehensive business software directory. If you need to find the best software for your needs whether it be business software or open source software, there's no doubt SourceForge should be your first top.
I use it to find software all of the time. Itss a great place to find business software and I still occasionally use it to download open source software.
