I am not an expert in coding, so I can not give you an answer within that area. One thing I can say certainly, is that Gitlab is not owned by Microsoft, which is great. Their past with antitrust/fraud is not something, you should forget.
Open Source is a great thing, we all should embrace.

GitLab has lots of features available even in the Free plan, like pages, pipelines and continuous integration, issue boards, wikis, time tracking. I really like that GitLab offers free private repositories and much more space per repository comparing to other Git repository management tools. Another significant point is that GitLab is under constant development, so new features appear on a constant periodicity.
Don't trust dates blindly. This applies to all git based tools, not just GitLab.
GitLab is worse than
Bugzilla because users can't specify operating system and other information systematically out of box. Admins and users may come up with incompatible solutions...
They don't track users, dates and reactions.
Whisper like functions with https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/user/discussions/#add-an-internal-note.
Users should delete their comment and publish it again in order to change their comment to internal.
I can't login my gitlab account in a couple of weeks. I can't renew my password with email(also junk mail) and also can't contact with any gitlab admin. They have no free support with email or something. Lastly i try a free month ultimate trial to contact with them but no success again. Already i love open source products, this situation is a total mess..
