Restrictive about AI use and forces open source code, so it isn't ideal, but if you respect these rules then it's a good platform.

For an alternative (heavy AI use or some proprietary stuff), Disroot's git is nice.

Non-profit git services for free/libre/open-source software projects. Familiar interface, works well, and easy to migrate from GitHub and other forges. Keep in mind that they only host FOSS projects, so you'll want to look elsewhere to host proprietary projects.

Essentially the flagship instance of the wonderful, actually FOSS git forge, Forgejo. Donations to Codeberg fund the developement of Forgejo

Codeberg is a great service that I really like, but it's important to note that there's a content restriction: its use is limited to the creation and development of free content and free and open-source software. Corresponding restrictions apply to private repositories.

What is Codeberg?

Codeberg is founded as a non-profit and non-government organization, with the objective to give the Open-Source code that is running our world a safe and friendly home, and to ensure that free code remains free and secure forever.

Dependencies on commercial, external, or proprietary services for the operation of the platform are thus decidedly avoided, in order to guarantee independence and reliability.

The mission of the Codeberg e.V. is to build and maintain a free collaboration platform for researching, creating, archiving, and preserving knowledge, code, and to document its development process.

We invite you to join our society as an active or supporting member, in order to shape and guarantee the future of Open-Source development. Read our mission statement on blog.codeberg.org .

Codeberg vs. Forgejo

Forgejo icon Forgejo is self-hostable free software for software development, built on top of Git icon Git. Codeberg is powered by Forgejo, which is in turn a hard-fork of Gitea icon Gitea. Compared to Codeberg, Forgejo is not one service, but free software to help you build your own. Everyone can install their own Forgejo instance to host their own projects. There are also public Forgejo instances as well as Codeberg you can use, but make sure you find a site that is actively maintained and updated, and that you trust the provider.

The codebase history of Forgejo and its predecessors predates Codeberg. However, since 2022, Codeberg is backing the development of Forgejo as an umbrella organization.

People are often asking why they should use Codeberg over other Forgejo instances. The most important reasons are:

  • a vivid, vibrant community to collaborate with and ask for help
  • active maintenance through the community and shared effort to provide an awesome experience
  • you are able to take part in operation and decisions, and ideally donate
  • we add additional services like Codeberg Pages, hosted CI and Weblate for localization of your software
