Phosphene information
What is Phosphene?
Phosphene allows you to use any video format readable by AVFoundation as your macOS wallpaper. These videos can be selected as wallpaper for both the desktop and lock screen from System Settings. Phosphene uses the same wallpaper pipeline as Apple's Aerials, ensuring seamless playback even after the app is closed. The videos loop precisely, and each display and Space can have its own wallpaper. The playback adjusts according to battery life, thermal pressure, Game Mode, or when the screen is covered by windows. A menu bar provides preview, pause, display switching, and launch-at-login options.
Phosphene requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later and is free and open source. It can also be installed via the official Homebrew cask.
