WallpaperMachine is a free, open-source macOS app that plays Wallpaper Engine wallpapers on the Mac desktop. Scene, video and web wallpapers are rendered live rather than converted to video: scenes follow the cursor, web wallpapers respond to clicks and scrolling, and every option the artist built in can be adjusted.
The Steam Workshop is built into the app and can be browsed without signing in. With a Steam account that owns Wallpaper Engine, wallpapers download inside the app, several at once, and updates to installed ones are found daily. Existing Wallpaper Engine folders, your own videos and pictures, and pixiv illustrations work as wallpapers too.
- Audio-reactive wallpapers move with whatever the Mac is playing, and ones with a music display show the current song
- A different wallpaper on each display, or one mirrored across them
- Playlists, and switching by schedule, sunrise and sunset, light or dark appearance, or Focus
- Control from the menu bar, keyboard shortcuts, Shortcuts and Siri
- Animated lock screen and screen saver (experimental, macOS 26)
- Interface in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese
A wallpaper pauses while its display is covered by windows or a full-screen app, and all of them pause during sleep or lock. On battery, playback can drop to a lower frame rate and resolution or pause until the Mac is plugged in. Settings shows the power the app draws, and each wallpaper gets an energy rating once it has been measured.
The app, its Rust renderer and its scene engine (Open Wallpaper Engine) are open source under GPL-2.0, with no paid features and no analytics. An optional one-time Supporter purchase pays for a sponsor listing and priority support; it unlocks nothing in the app.
Requires a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later. Workshop downloads and scene wallpapers need a Steam account that owns Wallpaper Engine. Compatibility varies by wallpaper, and Application wallpapers don't run. Not affiliated with Wallpaper Engine or Valve.
