SMath Studio - is a math program with 'paper'-like interface and numerous computing features. It has an ability to work with systems, matrices, vectors, complex numbers, infinities and fractions.
SMath Studio vs PTC Mathcad opinions
Free to commercial use. Interface is almost like Mathcad15.
SMath Studio is the best approximation to Mathcad in interface feel and features. The main shortcomings of SMath Studio relate to plots and some plug-ins, but it's only a matter of time before they catch up with Mathcad.
It is very close to Mathcad and works in the same way. Many of the other alternatives are toolboxes for programming rather than actual worksheets.
I have started using it. It is like MathCAD15.
niksfish2I have tried it. Like others said, it looks the same as Mathcad15 (best interface in my opinion, I dislike prime). Also, I like that when you put an unit you have to put ' first, so you don't have issues with naming variables that could be the same as the units.
Works similar to Mathcad, very powerful and free
Same "paper" layout as Mathcad.

Mathematica is a computational software program used widely in scientific, engineering, and mathematical fields and other areas of technical computing.
Mathematica vs PTC Mathcad opinions
Mathcad works with units with an engineer's point of view, mathematica works with an academic/theoretical point of view for mathematicians.
Maxima is a system for the manipulation of symbolic and numerical expressions, including differentiation, integration, Taylor series, Laplace transforms, ordinary differential equations, systems of linear equations, polynomials, and sets, lists, vectors, matrices, and tensors.
Online math solver, equation library, graphing calculator and science/engineering problem helper.
wxMaxima is a document based interface for the computer algebra system Maxima. wxMaxima uses wxWidgets and runs natively on Windows, X11 and Mac OS X. wxMaxima provides menus and dialogs for many common maxima commands, autocompletion, inline plots and simple animations.
Xcos is a graphical editor to design hybrid dynamical systems models. Models can be designed, loaded, saved, compiled and simulated.
Maple is a general-purpose commercial computer algebra system. Users can enter mathematics in traditional mathematical notation. Custom user interfaces can also be created.
Maple vs PTC Mathcad opinions
Redundant display of equations and data. No auto-resolve when changing a variable or constant content upstream to an equation. Works more like a command prompt line than like a equation editor. Not a proper format for documentation of calculations. Painful handling of units.
SymPy is a Python library for symbolic computation. The stated goals of the library are to become a full-featured computer algebra system and to keep a simple code base to promote extensibility and comprehensibility.
Miramath is an open source project inspired by the MathCad mathematical application. The main user interface consists of a page into which mathematical expressions can be entered or edited and then evaluated.
