Bean has some limitations: it doesn't do footnotes or use stylesheets and is only partially compatible with Word's file formats. Also, it allows in-line graphics, but not floating graphics.

- ross_au reviewed BeanraBean has long been mandatory macOS software. It is the successor of macOS's included TextEdit (think MS WordPad) which, while terrific, for many needed the next subset of features without going to Microsoft W$@d. Bean achieves this and never strives for dominance or for fully-fledged WriteNow status. So, if you like to de-tune your communication to TextEdit, then go to Bean. What's next? look for GrowlyBird Write. More +.

I use Bean for most of my word processing because my needs are simple and Bean isn't cluttered up with tons of stuff I don't need. But it's still capable of all the normal tasks, like importing most formats, editing tables and whatnot. Great app.
Bean is no longer being actively developed, but will be updated as necessary to patch bugs and maintain OS X compatibility
The developer of Bean released on January 1st a new version (3.0.3) with many improvements, but this software is now close source. The software is still provided at no cost.
According to the web page of the project, Bean version 2.4.x will continue to be open source software.
One of the first things to install on a new mac. Light and to the point.
