While some apps are unfortunately Play-exclusive, F-Droid has a fantastic selection of essential apps for all purposes.

Aurora Store lets you download apps from Google Play without a Google account or Google Play Services on your device. Unlike Google Play Store, Aurora Store doesn't have any ads or client-side tracking. Aurora Store also has an advanced search function that lets you filter out paid apps, apps with ads, and apps that require Google Play Services. Finally, Aurora Store shows you exactly which trackers are bundled with each app in the store.

Founded by Artem Russakovskii (the founder of Android Police), APKMirror is a community driven approach to hosting APKs for free apps. If you do have an AOSP device, and don't have access to Google Play Store, this is the next best thing. I use this with F-Droid.

Has the advantage of being open source and only lists open source apps (since it uses the F-Droid repository), which has privacy benefits over Google play Store. It has a better interface than F-Droid, plus a system of labels, rankings and comments, that are lacking on the original F-Droid app. (personal experience: images, like logos, load way faster on G-droid than F-Droid for me)
