I really like IzzyOnDroid as a source for open-source Android apps. New apps are manually reviewed, and there are extra checks for things like permissions, signatures and malware. I also like its strict approach to AI-generated code and software provenance.

An excellent source of additional FOSS software you can't find on F-Droid

What is IzzyOnDroid?

IzzyOnDroid applies thorough inclusion standards, manual reviews and multiple security checks for every app it distributes.

What makes IzzyOnDroid different?

IzzyOnDroid distributes the original release APKs signed by their developers, with the developer's signing identity preserved and verified across releases. If an APK suddenly has a different signing certificate, it is stopped for investigation, helping detect a compromised developer account or unexpected release.

Note to Developers: If the signing key changes, the app cannot be updated. This is Android's default security behavior, so keep your signing key safe and backed up.

New apps are manually reviewed An app is not accepted simply because its source code is public. The review starts with the source repository, looking at code quality, origin and development practices. Permissions, the Android manifest and APK contents are also examined. Apps are tested on a device: checking that they behave as expected, match what they claim to do and show no unexpected behavior such as unexplained network connections. The policy also restricts proprietary components, trackers, advertising, analytics, self-updaters bypassing its checks, and unnecessary cleartext network traffic.

Android permissions are shown for each app version, with sensitive and risky ones such as contacts, calendar, installed apps and other private data clearly highlighted. Such permissions should match the app's purpose; when unclear, the developer will be contacted for an explanation. Dangerous unexplained permissions can lead to rejection or removal. Incoming updates are checked automatically, with findings reviewed manually.

APKs undergo signing-key, manifest and signing-block analysis, VirusTotal malware scanning, library analysis and binary transparency logging. Reproducible Build verification can independently rebuild an APK and compare it with the distributed release. As of August 2026, close to 70% of apps are covered, including verification by independent builders.

IzzyOnDroid has a deliberate policy against applications fully or partly created using generative AI, considering licensing, privacy, ethical and environmental concerns, and code provenance.

For users, this adds a standard for how software is produced, reviewing its source, coding practices, APK behavior and overall suitability. It helps reduce the risk that AI-assisted code might contain unexpected or insufficiently reviewed behavior, while maintaining a higher bar for maintainer responsibility.

IzzyOnDroid uses the established F-Droid repository format and works with compatible clients such as Droid-ify and Neo Store (which also provide Reproducible Build status and download statistics).
