Google is adding Spark to the Gemini Mac app, bringing local AI agent automations to files
Google has launched Gemini Spark, its 24/7 personal AI agent for automating tasks, for the Gemini macOS desktop app. The update adds local file automation and new desktop agent capabilities through a Spark tab in the Gemini sidebar, where users can link specific folders for the agent to access, organize, and manage files locally. Users can choose which folders Spark can see and revoke access at any time.
Gemini Spark can automate tasks such as sorting PDFs into labeled subfolders or extracting figures from invoices to build Google Workspace budget spreadsheets. Some workflows can also run on a schedule, allowing recurring local automation. Google says a future update will let users start Spark tasks on their Mac from a phone.
Spark is also adding third-party integrations on web and mobile, including Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. These can be used to turn Keep notes into task lists, reserve tables, order groceries, or book apartment tours. The integrations begin rolling out this week, with macOS support coming later, while Spark is also adding real time topic tracking for blogs, news, social media, finance, sports, shopping, weather, and email. Gemini Spark for macOS is in beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US aged 18 and older, starting with version 1.80.15.516.
