WhatsApp is adding usernames to let people chat without sharing their phone numbers
WhatsApp is set to introduce usernames later this year, allowing users to chat without sharing their phone numbers for privacy. Once the feature goes live, phone numbers will no longer be shown to other users or businesses during first-time conversations, reducing exposure to unknown contacts.
Ahead of the launch, WhatsApp is opening username reservations this week. Users will be able to reserve a unique name through Settings Account Username. The app will also offer a username generator, while organizations, small businesses, and creators may claim their Instagram or Facebook name as their WhatsApp username.
Reservations will roll out globally, with availability depending on each country, and WhatsApp will notify users when the option becomes available in their region. To message a new contact after usernames launch, users will need to know their exact username. WhatsApp is also adding an optional username key for extra control, starting as a four-digit code during reservations and expanding to an alphanumeric code when the feature goes live.
