Threads hits 500M users, launches private feed controls, expands Communities & Live Chats

Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, nearly three years after launching as Meta’s answer to Twitter/X. Alongside the milestone, Meta is rolling out new features focused on feed personalization, communities, and real time conversations.

The main addition is "Your Algo", a private feed control tool that lets users choose which topics they want to see more or less of for one, three, or seven days. Unlike the earlier "Dear Algo" feature, which required a public post, these requests are only visible to the user. Your Algo is launching in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, giving Threads a temporary feed control option not currently offered by X or other major platforms.

Threads is also taking Communities out of beta, adding a Communities Hub for discovery and distinct icons to make each space easier to recognize. Live Chats will expand to all communities by July, with new options for co-hosting and quoting chat moments to the main feed, helping Threads better compete with X around live events and real time discussion.

500M users for an app that's barely 3 years old is honestly impressive. The private feed control thing is overdue too — the old public 'Dear Algo' posts always felt kinda awkward, like complaining out loud. Glad they fixed that.

Again, 500 million MAU is a nice number, but how much bots?

It's exactly the same with Twitter, about 500 million MAU but nobody knows (not even Twitter) how much bots (more the 60% for some analysts).

At least, Meta will give more details in its transparency reports, but there is so many ways to estimate monthly active users nowadays.
