Meta brings live chats on Threads for real-time group discussions centered around events

Meta is launching live chats on Threads, offering a real-time, public group chat experience centered on major events. This feature lets users participate in dynamic conversations during cultural moments, from album releases to sports games, as they unfold in real time. Live chats bring interactive capabilities, including real-time polls, countdowns, typing indicators, and synchronized live sports scores, which help keep discussions up to date with ongoing events.

While engaging with a live chat, users will notice visual cues such as a profile ring and a distinctive red live ring around the host's photo, highlighting who is currently active. Participants can send messages, photos, videos, and links, as well as use reaction emojis and vote in polls. Even when a chat has reached its participant limit, others can still follow the conversation, react to messages, and take part in polls. Live chats remain open and discoverable to the public even after the event concludes.

The feature will first appear in the NBA Threads community during the Playoffs, with live chat sessions hosted by community leaders and media figures. Meta also plans to add additional features such as co-hosting, play-by-play updates, lock screen widgets, and the ability to share chat messages on Threads feeds.
