Google integrates AI-powered sponsored ads into search with Gemini and chatbots
At Google I/O 2026, Google introduced new AI powered ad formats for Google Search as the platform shifts toward Gemini driven AI generated answers, and more agentic search features. The update brings sponsored content directly into AI Mode, Google’s conversational search experience, while Google is also preparing information agents that can monitor the web, send synthesized updates, and support ongoing tasks like apartment searches, shopping alerts, or trip planning.
The new ad formats include Conversational Discovery Ads, which can provide answer style replies to user questions, and Highlighted Answers, which add paid results to recommendation lists, such as sponsored app suggestions for product related queries. Google says all AI generated ads will be labeled as “sponsored,” while standard Google Search will also begin showing AI based ads in the coming months.
Google is also expanding AI powered Shopping Ads for larger purchase decisions, with Gemini selecting relevant sponsored products and generating custom product explainers. Business Agent for Leads adds a Gemini driven brand chatbot inside search ads, while Direct Offers will include AI generated product bundles, giveaways, local coupons, built in checkout, and personalized travel deals in AI assisted trip planning. Search is also gaining agentic booking and generative UI features, including custom dashboards, trackers, visual tools, graphs, and simulations generated directly in Search.
