Encrypted email & calendar app Tuta now available as a plugin in the Nextcloud App Store
Encrypted email provider Tuta has officially integrated its services with Nextcloud, making its app available in the Nextcloud App Store. The new integration allows users to install the Tuta Mail app directly into their locally-hosted or managed Nextcloud instances with a single click. Beyond simple coexistence, the partnership enables functional interoperability: users can create calendar events in Tuta Calendar that automatically generate Nextcloud Talk meeting links, and email attachments received in Tuta Mail can be stored directly into Nextcloud folders. This marks the first officially supported plugin for Tuta's platform, with the company announcing on its blog that additional integrations are planned.
The collaboration positions both companies as part of a broader movement toward digital sovereignty in Europe. According to the announcement, demand from private and business customers is driving the initiative as users seek to escape dependence on major U.S. tech platforms like Google and Microsoft. Both Tuta and Nextcloud emphasize their European origins, built in Germany, open source, and focused on strong data protection standards. The Nextcloud app requires administrative approval within each organization's Nextcloud environment, meaning family users or businesses will need their Nextcloud admins or providers to enable access to the Tuta plugin.
Tuta has also opened its plugin architecture to third-party developers, publishing documentation and guidelines on GitHub to encourage further integrations. The company frames this as the foundation for a “whole suite of plugins” that would expand Tuta's capabilities within the decentralized ecosystem. As European interest in sovereign replacements for Big Tech continues growing, the Tuta-Nextcloud partnership represents one of several efforts to build viable alternatives that keep data control in users' hands rather than concentrating it with major technology corporations.
