Google starts rolling out Gemini to Wear OS, replacing Google Assistant on major devices

Google is phasing out Google Assistant on Wear OS smartwatches and replacing it with Google Gemini, now rolling out to devices from Google, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. Watches must run Wear OS 4 or higher, with Wear OS 6 offering deeper integration with brand-specific apps.

Gemini can be activated by saying “Hey Google,” pressing the side button, or tapping the app icon. It supports more advanced and context-aware queries than Google Assistant, pulling data from emails, calendars, and other apps to answer questions or perform tasks like summarizing messages or adding events.

It also offers memory-based features, allowing users to store reminders such as parking locations or grocery trips. Gemini will be able to handle everyday questions like checking the weather or giving cooking instructions directly from the watch.

Even though i do not use WearOS (stayin' with my OG Pebble Time), why bake AI into everything? A friend of mine has to buy a dishwasher, he doesn't want to control his dishwasher from his goddamn phone? Same here, people go buy a smartwatch, to look at the time and get wrist notifications, not make a fake call to their grandma in the mittle of a meeting with new investors!
