Microsoft introduces passkey support for all consumer accounts on Windows, Android & iOS
Microsoft has introduced passkey support for all consumer accounts across Windows, Android, and iOS platforms. This feature enables users to create passkeys for their Microsoft accounts using options such as face recognition, fingerprint scanning, PIN, or a security key.
These passkeys can be used on various Microsoft apps and websites, including Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Copilot, on both desktop and mobile browsers. In the following weeks, the company will also add mobile app support for signing in with passkeys.
Microsoft's introduction of passkeys is a crucial move towards a passwordless future, following the company's initial Windows Hello authentication in 2015. The company has gradually transitioned towards passwordless authentication, introducing support for FIDO security keys in 2018 and launching a fully passwordless option for Microsoft accounts in 2021. The use of passkeys extends beyond Microsoft, with major tech firms like Apple and Google also adopting this authentication method.
