Microsoft launches major OneDrive overhaul with AI Copilot integration and Fluent Design
Microsoft has introduced the third generation of its cloud storage service, Microsoft OneDrive, with AI-powered Microsoft Copilot (Windows & 365) integration, a redesigned web home page, improved document sharing for businesses, and more. The OneDrive web app has been significantly redesigned to align with the Fluent design language of Windows 11 and the Microsoft 365 (Office) suite, just like a series of other features that align with its new structure, such as an AI-powered file recommendations feature.
The updated web view offers a new shared view, which lets users view shared files and the sharing method used quickly, and better permissions management. A new 'people view' allows users to focus on files shared with colleagues and filter by name or pin colleagues for quick access. Users can now personalize folder colors, which are visible to co-workers when files are shared. The OneDrive search experience has been enhanced with AI features for better discovery of friends and family in stored pictures, so you can search through your photos using natural language. Improved file creation with template suggestions and enhanced offline support, including instant sorting and offline availability, has been added. There is also a new favorite feature that lets users mark OneDrive files as favorites, syncing them across Windows 11, the web, and other platforms like Android and iOS.
These features are currently available to Microsoft 365 work and school customers. Starting in December, users will have the ability to open any document from OneDrive on the web in native desktop apps, along with a Media view for photos and videos, an 'Add new' option for creating new documents within OneDrive, and the integration of the Copilot AI system into OneDrive, which was announced but has not yet been fully implemented.
