Xenmaster's 2026 Back-End Web Development Catalog

This list is an update to the list I created seven years ago https://alternativeto.net/lists/8010/back-end-web-development/ which focused on the server-side aspect of web applications. The web and development has changed a lot since then and rather than re-write history, decided to create a new list based on current patters and shifts in enterprise environments. These details are based on both what I've seen in the professional world as well as for hobbyists and web development enthusiasts who run their own projects. The general pattern for back-end development will cover three main points for each function:

  • Self Hosted Option
  • Third-Party Service Option
  • AWS Option

I also cover any GUI interfaces available for folks who don't want to interact with these services using a terminal.

In addition to consulting the documentation for each of the tools below, I'd like to shout out the following projects which also played a big part in informing the overall structure of this list:

  • Jeff Delaney's 100 Second Videos: https://www.youtube.com/@Fireship
  • Kamran Ahmed's Roadmaps: https://roadmap.sh
  • Stack Overflow's Developer Survey: https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2025/

The beginning of this list will cover some common languages used to build server-based APIs for web applications, including Python, Javascript, C#, and Go. Honorable mentions, some of which were from my original list, include the following:

  • Rails with Ruby: one of the best developer experiences but counterbalanced by terrible performance from a speed and efficiency perspective. This framework is still really popular in India.
  • Spring Boot with Java: A very common enterprise-based application framework and particularly popular in China. But it requires Java, which I wouldn't wish on anyone.
  • Laravel with PHP: PHP gets a lot of hate, but I used it back 20 years ago and am still fond if it. PHP is generally useful for Wordpress-based sites too. Has performance issues though since it is an interpreted language.
  • Phoenix with Elixir: Also a great developer experience and is very popular on the Stack Overflow survey. Only reason I can't recommend is because you will be learning Elixir just to use Phoenix because it isn't a language really used for anything else mainstream.

Note that I don't plan on covering anything AI related for the development process. Of Generative AI, wickedest of technological inventions, I shall neither speak nor give direction.

Path of Python

One of the best language for beginners, Python also has a history of mature solutions for back-end API development that range from the batteries-included heavier frameworks like Django and light as the feather Flask. A good option for beginners, but less performant since Python is an interpreted language.

    Xen MasterXen Master’s note

The best language to learn for beginners, not only because of its easy to understand syntax, but also because it has a wide range of applications beyond web development, including data science, machine learning, desktop application development, and automation capabilities. It is an interpreted language, as opposed to compiled, so slower than other languages.

Path of .NET

.NET is a Windows-centered framework that has strong corporate backing and maturity over the years as a stable and effective means of developing both desktop and server-based applications. .NET integrates well with corresponding Microsoft back-end solutions and with infrastructure like MSSQL for databases, IIS for web servers, and Azure for hosting. Choose this if your team is already experienced in C#, .NET, and is looking for efficiency that only a compiled language can get.

Fun fact: AlternativeTo is built on .NET as the backbone of its infrastructure API architecture.

Pairs well with the front-end Blazor web framework.

Path of Javascript

JavaScript is the defacto language of the browser, specifically for front-end development. Thanks to the NodeJS runtime, this interpreted language can also run back-end application services as well, making JavaScript an ideal solution for keeping the front-end and back-end linguistically consistent.

Path of Go

Go is a compiled language meant to replace C which was developed by Google. It has many powerful advantages over interpreted language, including speed and efficiency, and also has the added bonus of not requiring too many dependencies compared to JavaScript and Python. While third party frameworks and packages are available for Go, most of what anyone needs from a web-server comes directly from Go's excellent standard library.

Path of Deno

JavaScript has a lot of benefits when running as a language, but the creator of NodeJS also realized there was room for improvement for both performance and security. The result of that is the Deno runtime, which has its own ecosystem of services and applications and can also interoperate with the JavaScript ecosystem noted above.

Choose this if you are looking to try something new which is more stable than vibe-coded crap like Bun, but less stodgy than enterprise standards like NodeJS.

Databases

80% of the web applications utilizing a front-end back-end architecture are going to be Create Read Update Delete (CRUD) frameworks, and the key component to all of these is a data storage system that holds the application's data in rows and columns. Most infrastructure includes NoSQL databases for working with documents rather than tables and a caching mechanism that includes key-value stores running in-memory. Below are the most popular databases I've seen and the tools used to work with them.

A key-value store most often used as a caching mechanism, similar to Memcached. I've never seen a professionally deployed webservice not using Redis or its FOSS equivalent Valkey.
