What is PostgreSQL?
PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source object-relational database system. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64), and Windows. It is fully ACID compliant, has full support for foreign keys, joins, views, triggers, and stored procedures (in multiple languages). It includes most SQL:2008 data types, including INTEGER, NUMERIC, BOOLEAN, CHAR, VARCHAR, DATE, INTERVAL, and TIMESTAMP. It also supports storage of binary large objects, including pictures, sounds, or video. It has native programming interfaces for C/C++, Java, .Net, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, ODBC, among others, and exceptional documentation.

worsening4512 thinks SQLite is an alternative to PostgreSQL
It's really great database system.
I can't understand why people still using Ms SQL Server or MySQL Server... Postgresql is really fast, secure and easy. And also FREE! :) If you don't use ORACLE, or you don't want to pay huge money for ORACLE license; what are you waiting for?
just use POSTGRESQL. You won't be regret ;)
Its my favorit database. I used MS SQL, Firebird, MySQL but this is the best.
Do you want to tell us, what you like so much about PostgreSQL that makes it so much better than the other databases?

PostgreSQL is mandatory for heavy users of GIS, specially QGIS. Setting up is not exactly hard, as the administrator just need to edit two files and open the right firewall ports. The challenge begins when data needs to be imported and maintained. PostgreSQL can be combined with a good and free data analysis tool like KNIME (KNIME can even help inexperienced admins to get data into the database). Speaking as a openSUSE user, for queries, check DBeaver (has a free community version) and DataGrip (wonderful, but commercial paid software); for modelling, check Visual Paradigm (has a very limited community version and very powerful well paid versions).
