Alternative Software

I love AlternativeTo and open source software, but I don't believe in only open source. If I don't believe in only open source, why the name? While I prefer open source software, not every piece of software can be or should be open source. People need options. That's why I love AlternativeTo - it's all about giving people options! A little about me: In my free time, I like to find new software to add to AlternativeTo and play the drums.

Cobalt is a great way to download videos from various platforms. I have only used it for YouTube, but it appears as though it will work with several video streaming sites as well. One of my favorite features is that it runs as a web app so I don't have to download a dedicated app!

Linux Mint is a great distro for anyone new to Linux. All of the built-in apps and tools make it really easy to use out of the box. Unfortunately, the desktop environment, Cinnamon, looks several years old. If you're want something that looks beautiful, you could try ZorinOS. However, the packages, the kernel, and the Ubuntu base aren't as up-to-date as Linux Mint. Other than the UI (which is personal preference) Mint is great!

One of the best resource monitors for Linux that's not only functional, but also beautiful and thoughtfully designed.

Great ad-less client for Spotify that is open source. It feels almost like Spotify Premium. I just wish Apple would allow it on iOS.

A much needed and helpful service. Most big tech companies seem to make their Terms of Service very hard to read. That's why Tos;DR is so useful. Because unpaid contributors do have to make most of the summaries, there are a lot of the Terms of Service for smaller companies/apps that aren't in the database. That being said, Tos;DR is very good at simplifying the Terms of Service for many different apps and services.

The good: It's really cool to see an open source model that can analyze pictures. It even gives this functionality to devices that can't run Apple Intelligence. I also like how everything is done on-device and how the app allows you to ask the LLM about the pictures. The not-so-good: The model is slow, and doesn't work well for any tasks beyond just describing basic details from pictures. Often, it gets items wrong when specifically asked to draw conclusions from the picture. It's definitely...

Very extensive list of cross-platform, free software. Many of the apps I had not even heard of before.

Vecto3d is great at turning SVG images into 3D objects. The results are adjustable and very good. The one caveat is that the images do have to be fairly simple (such as a logo) to get the best results. It is great to see a tool such as this that is free and open source, though!

Ollama is a great way to run open source AI models locally. The installation of models is very straightforward, and Ollama even has their own repository for the models so I don’t have to worry about getting them from a reputable source. Unfortunately, it’s not the easiest app for people who don’t like command-line-interfaces, but this does make it a really powerful tool. To get a graphical interface, I use Ollama-App. So far, it has been working pretty well even though it is in beta for...

Signal is my go-to messaging app. I love that it is end-to-end encrypted and easy to use! The user-friendliness of the app made it easy to get my friends and family to get onto the app. It works really well for everything that I use it for. Plus, it’s open source.

Ultimate Vocal Remover works really well for what I use it for. Some songs can get a little muddy-sounding, but it seems as though it gets similar results to online paid offerings. I like that everything is done on-device so nothing is uploaded to the cloud. Plus, it's free and open source!

Unwatched provides a great way to keep track of all of my favorite content creators on YouTube. One of my favorite features, however, is that I can watch YouTube videos inside the app without ads. This app is continually improving with multiple features being added since I downloaded it. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to watch YouTube on iOS without ads!
