Jitsi Desktop (previously SIP Communicator) is a legacy audio/video and chat communicator with full encryption, precedessor of Jitsi Meet .
Jitsi Desktop is not actively developed anymore: last version, released in October 2017, can be still downloaded from GitHub. Its successor is Jitsi Meet
Jitsi Desktop vs Zoom opinions
Free, open source, much better privacy, and endo-to-end encryption. Does not bow to the whims of the Chinese government.
Jitsi is better than some commercial offerings
Jitsi Desktop is not an alternative Zoom client. It does not allow the user to join a Zoom meeting with other Zoom users. Listing it as an alternative Zoom client is misleading.
Google Hangouts is the best chat, event, conference, Zoom Alternative.
It's not available for linux
No login or app download necessary, works with any web browser.
It's free and open source. The interface is extremely good, not like a lot of open source projects. You can also download and run your own instance, and the video is peer to peer thus it can even be run on a cheap VPS.
Go ahead, video chat with the whole team. In fact, invite everyone you know. Jitsi Meet is a fully encrypted, 100% open source video conferencing solution that you can use all day, every day, for free — with no account needed.
Jitsi Meet vs Zoom opinions
Feels like Zoom but open source, easier to use, and much better UI. I think my grandma could use this just fine if that says anything!
Open source, isn't proprietary.
Go with jitsi over zoom, it's more trustworthy and web based. It's also been around longer than zoom.
It's free and open source with no limitations on numbers and time.
end-to-end encrypted, FOSS, owned by a large company (Atlassian) that I trust
it just works, no need even to register, just set up your chat and give out the url.
It's privacy respecting and fast.
Whether you’re part of a school club, a gaming group, a worldwide art community, or just a handful of friends that want to spend time together, Discord makes it easy to talk every day and hang out more often.
Discord vs Zoom opinions
I think that Discord is much more convenient because It's an awesome tool for long-term communication. You can separate people by role and give them different permission. You can share information that should be only visible for your particular department. And of course an awesome sound and video quality. I think discord one of the best app for communication now
Has all the options zoom has and doesnt have any the security issues. No need for premium. private calls and rooms can be setup, file sharing, screen sharing, video and audio calls are all available
Discord is not an alternative Zoom client. It does not allow the user to join a Zoom meeting with other Zoom users. Listing it as an alternative Zoom client is misleading.
Provides very different functionality. Registration required, knowledge of server management/conversation creation. Some limits are imposed by Discord Nitro as well, making text largely unreadable on 1080p displays.
Feels less serious and you can make more friends there
Totally free, it has even increased the voice chat participants due to the pandemic and is easy to use.
Discord is not a video calling app.
Element is a secure collaboration and messaging app based on the Matrix protocol. It’s decentralised to deliver digital sovereignty, and based on an open standard for easy connections and interoperability. It is end-to-end encrypted by default.
Element vs Zoom opinions
Element is one app that communicates over the Matrix protocol. You can use it via the Tor-Browser, so its as private as possible.
But for Matrix there are tons of other apps for all operating systems.
As an Alternative to Zoom, its not just for Videocalls, but a replacement for Discord and Telegram (features) or Signal and Whatsapp (End to End encrypted Chats), while not tracking you, being open source, self-hostable and by that decentralized.
Better privacy, also free, open-source.
It's good, but not alternative..
Riot does not provide video conferencing on its own. The centralized integration server scalar.vector.im allows to embed Jitsi Meet, which is an independent project.
Unlike Discord and Skype, Matrix is a decentralized, encrypted and more privacy-oriented communications platform. :)
Doesn't do video conferencing (can optionally embed Jitsi Meet). Requires account registration to join chat rooms.
it's friendly, free and decentralized

Jami (formerly GNU Ring, SFLphone) positions itself as a potential free Skype replacement
Jami vs Zoom opinions
Zoom keeps getting worst and can close any day. Jami instead keeps getting better and as a GPLed software anybody can improve it and develop it. There's no central point of failure. You have E2E encryption and full control over video and audio quality (also JACK is implemented).
Jami does video chat and also text chat
