Pretty broken at the moment, even while using an Insider build.

  • Sluggish performance, watching a video is a no-no even if this is a type 1 hypervisor
  • Takes ages to start
  • If you run a VPN on the host, the internet on Windows Sandbox just refuses to work. Good job guys, you had 1 job and you fucked up.

There's definitely potential here though. In 2-3 years when Microsoft has finally bothered to work out the issues, this will be a great program. Until then, just use Virtualbox.

It's not really a virtual machine though, it's a sandbox. Running files such as an .exe in an isolated environment. No need for a VM if you just need it for stuff like that.

What is Windows Sandbox?

Windows Sandbox has the following properties:

Part of Windows – everything required for this feature ships with Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise. No need to download a VHD! Pristine – every time Windows Sandbox runs, it’s as clean as a brand-new installation of Windows Disposable – nothing persists on the device; everything is discarded after you close the application Secure – uses hardware-based virtualization for kernel isolation, which relies on the Microsoft’s hypervisor to run a separate kernel which isolates Windows Sandbox from the host Efficient – uses integrated kernel scheduler, smart memory management, and virtual GPU
