Windows Movie Maker Alternatives

Windows Movie Maker allowed users to simply create, edit, and share movies right on their computer. With easy creation tools such as drag-and-drop, this built-in software served the needs of many users that needed a simple tool to edit home movies.

As ubiquitous as it was on older versions of Windows, the built-in Movie Maker is no longer developed and bundled with modern versions like Windows 10. In its wake have come many video editing alternatives both simple and complex, as well as ones that can be found for iOS and Android.

For those of you that would prefer editing their audiovisual content in an app they can audit, open source alternatives to Windows Movie Maker are available.

It's a good app, but it's a little laggy... and it's lack of subtitles... Besides that, the app is great.

Movie maker is a much more simplified product and allows easy recording of narration and much easier timeline editing. While this would work for some scenarios it cannot be used to the same extent as Windows Movie Maker.

Movie maker was brilliant at taking film stills and stop motion frames in and outputting a video. SHotcuts "says" it does this, even on the forum - "tick the properties box and it will import the rest of your folder of stills..." It fails every time. Out of 45 frames, it only ever imports 5 maximum whereas Moviemaker just did the job.

It can actually do everything Movie Maker does. The problem is the UI is not very intuitive and you need to watch a Youtube tutorial and take notes so you don't forget it. But once you figure it out the workflow is really fast. It also works with all sorts of formats including MP4.

Theagurg The free version contains everything you need for editing movies. Sure, the free version can't edit 4K and only has "limited" (I have never found these limits) functionality but if all you need is cutting video from your holiday it is perfect. Also, the learning curve is not that steep.
