What is VirtualDub?
VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.
The project seems to be no longer developed. Last version, 1.10.4.35491, released on October 27, 2013, can be still downloaded from SourceForge

It was great... and now
Virtualdub2 is now available with an improved interface (zoom scroll), better codecs and color management. It should be the first "alternativeto" but does not seem to even be in the list.
Hello Community,
this is the best Programm for cutting a large Video. I use VirtualDup since the first version :)
Simply the best !!
Virtual Dub is pretty good at capturing video from a MiniDV Video Camera. The interface is not very good however.
Was my first video editing tool, even before I dabbled into Windows Movie Maker. It is a very useful piece of program, though linear video editing will not be everyone's cup of tea. Before I used it extensively for simple cut, paste croping, conversion to various format like Divx, Xvid, mp4 etc. Also the one feature I liked was saving of audio portion of a video file. In those days Avidemux wasn't available.
With some Plugins like Directshow Input Driver or ffchandler's plugins you can open wmv, mov, mkv and else.
On windows I used this a lot, but since I switched to Ubuntu I have been using Avidemux which is almost identical to this program, but nowadays I think Avidemux has more capabilities. This program is still very good though.
Avidemux is probably better at basic editing, filtering, and encoding, but it does not have the ability to capture video.
