What is Microsoft Defender?
Windows Security (known as Windows Defender Antivirus before Windows 10 May 2020 Update, Windows Defender before Windows 10 Creators Update, or Microsoft Defender Antivirus before Windows 11) is an anti-malware component of Microsoft Windows. It was first released as a downloadable free anti-spyware program for Windows XP, and was later shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7. It has evolved into a full antivirus program, replacing Microsoft Security Essentials, as part of Windows 8 and later versions.

Microsoft Defender runs on Windows –– but not macOS. What alternative do you recommend for macOS?

Excellent cause it is free and works, but capriciously detects viruses & spyware in clean and harmless software. If you tell Defender to ignore a given detection, then in the next update deletes the "offender" again. Annoyingly those updates are very frequent.
I've been using it since the Fall Creators Update and it's awesome. Non-intrusive. Haven't had a virus in over 2yrs with the help of Microsoft Defender.
Has improved their security over the last years. It is not ***t as it used to be.
This has become very decent antivirus product, I can now feel a sense of security of using it. Of course Microsoft has still a lot way to go until it can compet with big AV companies.
I recommend this to people who are just casually browsing the web with an adblock on and without visiting any shady websites and you're good to go but not recommended if you are going to visit the absolute shadiest of all websites.
Windows Defender is also good if you combine it with Malwarebytes (On demand scanning only), it will finish off almost everything Defender wasn't able to clean.
Computer security depends more on the user's browsing habits than on the brand of the Antivirus, Microsoft Defender works well and is sufficient on W10, now, it's better to learn also good security practices that an Antivirus doesn't replace.
