my personal favorite, lightweight, fast, 100% free and open source
After installation, there's no icon on the desktop, start menu, or anything! Just the program files, and there are lots of .exe files that when you click on them, nothing happens. WTF!!!?
Has been in an early alpha version for decades and recognizes nothing.
Cisco, owner of clamav, blocked Russian region from receiving antivirus database, making it completely useless in Russia. Not very freedom of Cisco. But overall, great malware detection tool.
ClamAV only makes sense for Linux and is not used to protect Linux users but Windows users, in case several people using both Windows and Linux are working in a network, you don't need Antivirus on Linux, but if you need to send an .exe file to a colleague on Windows, ClamAV allows you to check it and avoid sending an infected file to your colleague.
Garbage. After installing from official repo: "WARNING: Clamd was NOT notified: Can't connect to clamd through /run/clamav/clamd.ctl: No such file or directory"
Probably very late but you have to update database first :) by using "freshclam" as root.
At least if you are a Mac user you have to edit a hidden file but after almost two hours of looking I couldn't find what to edit it to. Not real helpful changing preferences if you don't know what to change it to so I guess I'll never bother looking into this antivirus app again.
