What is Volant?

Volant is a free, open-source keyboard launcher for macOS. A single shortcut opens a search bar that launches apps with ranking that learns from your choices, finds files, contacts and today's calendar events, and supports per-app hotkeys and aliases. It also answers as you type, with a calculator, unit, currency and crypto conversion, dates, time zones and colors, plus emoji search, text snippets and quicklinks.

Beyond launching, Volant keeps plain Markdown notes and a clipboard history encrypted at rest, and offers quick Mac controls for audio devices, volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, keep-awake, lock, sleep and restart. For developers, it lists running local dev servers and Claude Code or Codex sessions running in Herdr, showing which ones are waiting for input, and can hold separate AI conversations with Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode over the Agent Client Protocol.

Volant is built around privacy: the main app is sandboxed with no network access, and features that need the network run in separate helper processes. It needs no account and has no telemetry. Sandboxed WebAssembly extensions install from a signed catalog, settings can optionally sync through iCloud, and users coming from Raycast can import snippets, quicklinks, aliases, hotkeys, notes and themes. It requires macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon.
