I was looking for something that would switch me back to my standard desktop easier, and got a lot more :-) This is great for people using more than 1 browser and multi-tasking. Nonetheless, now I prefer https://alternativeto.net/browse/search/?q=Dexpot. Dexpot is more simplified and has easier access. Dexpot doesn't give me hotkey errors. Dexpot will let you switch screen resolution.

Under Setup's Expert tab, you can set VirtuaWin to ignore hidden window activation. This is why I use VirtuaWin over Windows 10's virtual desktops. With this setting set, VirtuaWin will not change the active desktop when you close an instance of a program and another instance is open.

Example: Open Excel. Switch to another desktop. Open another window of Excel. Close this second window. In Windows 10 virtual desktop or with the above setting disabled in VirtuaWin, you will be switched back to the first desktop to look at the first window of Excel. With this setting enabled in VirtuaWin, nothing happens after the second instance of Excel closes.

The note underneath the long description above says that there haven't been any releases since 2012.

However, the author has released a couple of 4.5 betas. See blog posts from March 2016

Current Windows 10 version 1803 makes VirtuaWin obsolete.

Amazing! Just works! Only thing though when using as a portable app the keyboard shortcuts don't work so I have to click the icon manually, I hope this gets fixed soon.

Fast. Provides features that are missing from native Windows 10 virtual desktops (like a 2D grid of desktops). Still works with Windows 10, except for shortcut keys hijacked by the native virtual desktops - I had to use AutoHotKey to override them.

What is VirtuaWin?

VirtuaWin is a virtual desktop manager for the Windows operating system (Win9x/ME/NT/Win2K/XP/Win2003/Vista/Win7/Win10). A virtual desktop manager lets you organize applications over several virtual desktops (also called ‘workspaces’). Virtual desktops are very common in Unix/Linux, and once you get accustomed to using them, they become an essential part of a productive workflow.

VirtuaWin is designed to be simple and elegant to use yet still be highly configurable and extensible. Have as many as 9 virtual desktops on Windows with VirtuaWin!
