What is VATES?

VATES is embeddable AI infrastructure. Developers integrate it into their own product through an API, the way they would integrate a payment or messaging provider. It also runs without any development work: as a widget added to an existing site with one line of JavaScript, or as a standalone chat URL. Both modes share the same foundation.

What makes it structurally different is what it does not do. Knowledge is never converted into vectors. There is no embedding step and no re-ranking stage. Knowledge stays as structured plain text that can be opened, read and corrected line by line. An edit takes effect on the very next question, with no re-indexing and no waiting. Every answer points back to the entries that produced it, so a wrong answer can be traced and its source fixed. A deletion is real, leaving no residue in an index.

Three roles divide the work. bard converts sources — natural language, logical notation, images and PDFs — into the knowledge format. druid administers the knowledge base and analyses the logs. vates is the customer-facing endpoint that answers end users in their own language.

An MCP server is exposed for agent clients, offering a single read-only tool.

Operations include audit logs with a SHA-256 hash chain, two-factor authentication, WebAuthn/FIDO2 passkeys, IP allowlists and denylists, per-route rate limiting, encrypted daily backups and a catalog-driven data lifecycle.

Billing is deposit-based: no monthly subscription, no minimum spend, no cancellation fee. Consumption is deducted from a prepaid balance, with a minimum top-up of USD 5.00.

Console and documentation are localised into 23 languages across 9 writing systems. This is interface localisation; the assistant answers in whatever language it is addressed in.
