TrueCrypt alternatives: 25+ disk encryption apps for Mac

TrueCrypt is a utility that generates an in-file encrypted disk that is able to be mounted as a real disk, with support for encrypting both internal and external storage devices and partitions.

As TrueCrypt has been discontinued for several years, its development has been succeeded specifically by VeraCrypt and CipherShed. Most importantly, both of those alternatives that serve as successors are also in active development.

Outside of CipherShed and VeraCrypt, there are free and open source alternatives to TrueCrypt available on all major operating systems, including Android and iOS.

Alternatives to TrueCrypt for Mac with any license

  • VeraCrypt

VeraCrypt is a free disk encryption software brought to you by IDRIX and that is based on TrueCrypt . It adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. For example, when the system partition is encrypted, TrueCrypt uses PBKDF2-RIPEMD160 with 1000 iterations whereas in VeraCrypt we use 327670.

    • TrueCrypt was discontinued in mysterious circumstances. The code was taken forward by VeraCrypt. It is open source and some security vulnerabilities have been fixed since the TrueCrypt days. It's a great app for creating encrypted containers or encrypting whole drives. Backwards compatible with TrueCrypt. Truly excellent software. Cryptomator provides transparent, client-side encryption for your cloud. Protect your documents from unauthorized access. Cryptomator on the desktop is free and open source software, so you can rest assured there are no backdoors. Cryptomator for Android/iOS costs a small fee and is not open source, but it uses an open-core component that can be checked for backdoors. Easy and Reliable We understand simplicity as a key aspect of security.

    • Truecrypt is no more. Try the more updated and secure VeraCrypt. Both of those are for making an encrypted container into which files are placed. Cryptomator is different: it encrypts file-by-file (makes an encrypted version of each file). This enables you to sync/backup encrypted versions of your files to the cloud, which the TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt approach doesn't. Cryptomator thus fulfills a different need than does TC/VC. • FinalCrypt

FinalCrypt uses the most unbreakable encryption: "One Time Pad" Encryption and has a well designed graphical user interface and an equally advanced command line interface for large automations. Reasons for choosing FinalCrypt: 1. Most people choose Disk-Encryption as it's easier to unlock a whole drive, but Big-Brother or Malware can then also read all your files. Only use File-Encryption! 2. Most software uses recently broken AES encryption: https://www.theinquirer .
