Almost everyone thinks VeraCrypt is a great alternative to TrueCrypt.
JohnFastman TrueCrypt was discontinued in mysterious circumstances. The code was taken forward by VeraCrypt. It is open source and some security vulnerabilities have been fixed since the TrueCrypt days. It's a great app for creating encrypted containers or encrypting whole drives. Backwards compatible with TrueCrypt. Truly excellent software.

soshowal An almost identical interface to TrueCrypt but added security that closes a security hole in TrueCrypt.

Open source fork of TrueCrypt. And most important - it's still developed, unlike TrueCrypt.

uriahheap98 Because it's an actual fork of TrueCrypt. User interface is the same also, as well as, being backward compatible with TrueCrypt files/containers.

JohnFastman Truecrypt is no more. Try the more updated and secure VeraCrypt. Both of those are for making an encrypted container into which files are placed. Cryptomator is different: it encrypts file-by-file (makes an encrypted version of each file). This enables you to sync/backup encrypted versions of your files to the cloud, which the TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt approach doesn't. Cryptomator thus fulfills a different need than does TC/VC.

There is more to say about thos software. But I want to mention one thing: Nowadays almost every one has file in the cloud they want to acces any time and any place with any device. With Cryptomator you can do this even with encrypted files. That is very practical if you want to have private documents like for instance your passport accessible everywhere.

It uses EncFs method for encryption. And their website is pretty clear about the encryption process

    3. Password-encryption of files and folders. The program is written in Java and therefore platform-independent and runs on nearly every system without installation, but requires a Java Runtime Environment - that is already installed in most cases.
Almost everyone thinks File Lock PEA is a great alternative to TrueCrypt.
    4. A fork of the now-discontinued TrueCrypt. CipherShed is a program that can be used to create encrypted files or encrypt entire drives (including USB flash drives and external HDDs).

      Discontinued

No releases since Sep 6, 2017. See https://www.ciphershed.org/news/

Most users think CipherShed is a great alternative to TrueCrypt.
    5. Encrypto lets you encrypt files before sending them to friends or coworkers. Just drop a file into Encrypto, set a password, and then send it however you normally would — but this time with added security. It’s free for both Mac and Windows.

This alternative is disputed. AES Crypt is still a legitimate alternative to TrueCrypt, but it might have issues that some users think are important.
AES Crypt is just an encryption program for a single file not for container or partitions like TrueCrypt.

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel module to provide the filesystem interface. You can find links to source and binary releases below.

      Warning

The author has agreed that EncFS in its current form is dangerous (to security) for several reasons. Wikipedia has a brief summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EncFS#General_Security_Concerns
