What is Cryptomator?
Cryptomator provides transparent, client-side encryption for your cloud. Protect your documents from unauthorized access. Cryptomator is free and open source software, so you can rest assured there are no backdoors.
Easy and Reliable
We understand simplicity as a key aspect of security. With Cryptomator you don't have to deal with accounts, key management, cloud access grants or cipher configurations. Just choose a password and you're ready to go.
You don't even need to specify what cloud you use. Cryptomator encrypts files and doesn't care where you store them. This makes it a lightweight application, which we believe is a huge benefit for reliability. Complexity would kill security.
Cryptomator is a so-called transparent encryption utility. This means that you don't have to learn new workflows. Just work with your files as you're used to.
Secure and Trustworthy
Cryptomator encrypts file contents and names using AES. Your passphrase is protected against bruteforcing attempts using scrypt. Directory structures and file sizes get obfuscated. The only thing which cannot be encrypted without breaking your cloud synchronization is the modification date of your files.
Cryptomator's desktop app is a free and open source software licensed under the MIT / X Consortium License. This allows anyone to check our code. It is impossible to introduce backdoors for third parties. Also we cannot hide vulnerabilities. And the best thing is: There is no need to trust us, as you can control us!
Vendor lock-ins are impossible. Even if we decided to stop development: The desktop source code is already cloned by hundreds of other developers. As you don't need an account, you will never stand in front of locked doors.

If you are on Windows, use Veracrypt. But also, change to Linux if you can.
Now that you are on Linux, natively encrypt your whole file system with LUKS and be happy, never worry about it again. Use Luks for other drives too.
alelondon Upvoted a comment on Rclone as an alternative to Cryptomator
Rclone offers encryption, as well as Cryptomator, PLUS can sync your files with the cloud so there is no need to install proprietary cloud sync clients.
What it's for: Cryptomator lets you make encrypted versions of folders and files suitable for storage in the cloud, so that services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Box.com, OneDrive and others aren't able to read the contents of your files. Cryptomator is therefore a privacy-protecting app, and should be of interest to everyone wishing to keep their private files private in an age of mass surveillance and companies mining our data.
Why Cryptomator is good:
How Cryptomator works: In the app you create a "Vault" which is just a folder that will contain encrypted versions of your files and a keyfile. You select a (hopefully very strong) password for the Vault. You choose where you want to save the Vault on your computer. This is the folder you should tell your sync service to sync. When you open the Vault by typing in the password, the decrypted version shows up in your browser mounted as a webdav folder, or "virtual hard drive". You put your files in there. Cryptomator encrypts them in real time. If you look in the encrypted version of the folder, you just see gibberish, which is all your sync service can see. Then, you go to another computer (if you like) and you download your encrypted files. You open Cryptomator, choose the keyfile from the synced folder. You enter your password and - again - the decrypted version appears in your browser as a webdav folder in and out of which you can save things. You can even have a Vault open on who machines and the encrypted versions will sync in real time and Cryptomator will decrypt the differences in real time. You can have as many such Vaults as your heart desires, all with different passwords.
Some minor limitations:
Hi John, thank you for you great reviews of different encryption and security related software here on Alternativeto! Regarding Cryptomator, I would like to ask you what is your comment about the fact that the Android app is not fully open source.
Thanks, Matteo

For me, I only compare cyptomator to boxcryptor. ctmt is good: foss, free.
but boxcryptor is more useable.
boxcryptor is good: treat file as a file, not bundled inside a vault.
This make boxcryptor MUCH more preferred.
however, boxcryptor has bad pt: close source, paid version for encrypted filename, limited device, no linux ver.
I now use encfs4win.

According to this Github ticket, Cryptomator is open-source only for the desktop app. The mobile projects do not have available source code.

Over the past few years, Cryptomator has open sourced their mobile apps. All of their clients are now open source.

Lock down your local or cloud files in an incredibly simple way!
The industry standard, works great on Linux (Vanilla OS) but if you use it on iOS expect to pay a pretty penny.
Easy to use e really secure
On of the best encryption programs I have used, I use it on my iPhone, Windows and Linux. But for some reason the Linux version is buggy as hell. When I create a new vault, it takes forever to create it and when I open an existing vault, it never opens it. Show the Linux version more love. But otherwise it is excellent!
